Movie Review - THOR

THOR

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stelan Skarsgard, Kat Dennings, Clark Gregg, Ray Stevenson and more...

Directed by: Kenneth Branagh Screenplay: Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz, Don Payne Story: J Michael Straczynki and Mark Protosevich Based on Comics by: Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Larry Lieber Original Music: Patrick Doyle

Premise: "Pride comes before a fall." Thor, son of Odin, gets thrown from Asgard after defying his father's orders. Now he has to deal with being on Earth. But all isn't as it would seem.

Review: The movie was fun! Had several funny bits that really brought a lot into it, especially after the heavy fodder from the beginning.

Totally loved Asgard. And we got to see a beautiful pan of the place (with some possible Jack Kirby homage) and even caught glimpses of Asgardian magic/science. For the two realms we get to see aside from Earth, the IMAX was great!

The 3D doesn't do much, but it totally shines at the credits when we get to travel through the Yggdrasil and follow galaxies, stars, and nebulas as we hit each of the nine realms. All the special effects were good, some of the sky effects quite awesome.

Oh, and I want me one of the Asgard Guardian machines. They ROCK!

Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman had decent chemistry, which was nice. Thor's friends were a little underused, but they had their moments. Watching Thor and his Hammer go at it in the Northern Realm was a blast! That is one dangerous hammer.

The distinctive look of Thor and Loki were mostly preserved, which was great.  Shield gets into the act, as all of this is leading towards The Avengers movie. (Make sure to sit through the credits! Another minute or two more of movie at the end!)

Overall it was a decent romp and worth a look.

Rating: 4 out of 5  (Hubby's Rating: Would pay full IMAX 3D price again)

  1. Hi Gloria. I just saw Thor today. I liked much of it, but I had a hard time getting past the fake NM town it was set in. NM desert towns are one story stucco. That looked like a tourist town from Colorado. Also, how do I put this delicately? The extras in the movie didn't look a thing like people from small NM desert towns. I did enjoy the special effects and the story, though. Thanks for your review.

  2. I do know what you mean. When they first showed Puento Antiguo, I thought it looked like so many other little Movie towns. (First thought was the one from CARS. lol) And it did look awfully new! They do show filming in Santa Fe NM, but also California, and NY.

Heck, last week's Fast Five showed streets from Puerto Rico and said they were South America. PR's style is somewhat unique.

I think movie making peeps just throw what they want around and know the majority of viewers won't have a clue what a location really looks like. It can make for some truly bad errors. :P

  3. Although it is set in new mexico, the town looks like is loosely modeled on Broxton Oklahoma as it appears in the current continuity of Thor, (the current run of Thor has Asgard rebuilt in Oklahoma just outside of Broxton).

Loved the movie. The first comics that I ever read were Thor. I honestly thought I would never see it on the big screen, never mind written so well.

And I loved looking for the easter eggs planted throughout the movie.

  4. Oh nice! While I followed the comics off and on back in the day, I've not seen it for a long time. That's kind of funny, really.

Oh yeah, fan service, we had a discussion after the film on how they seem to have sneaked in Hawkeye into the film to tie it to the Avengers even more. lol. I;m sure there were plenty of bits we missed.
